Rock Climbing Technique Class (4-hours)
Classes are conducted daily at Castle Rock State Park and other climbing destinations. This class focuses on building endurance, technique and route finding skills for Beginner and Intermediate level climbers looking to improve their rock climbing ability. This includes Bouldering and Top-Rope Climbing. We also cover specific climbing terminology while gaining confidence in movement over rock!

Anchor and Rappel Class (8-hours)


This class is a hybrid of what you would expect from a rock climbing guide training course and a recreational climber course but with a reasonable price. We believe in empowering our students with rock climbing guide specific skills and Rescue Skills necessary to survive your initial years of outdoor climbing!

Our lesson plan is very comprehensive and has been adopted from several Guide Training and Certification Organizations, approved by the US Dept. of Interior. You will find no other guiding company, gym or school that offers the same or a better currculum! This course presents a deeper look using Science and Math, at cords, webbing, knots, active and passive gear, carabiners, assessing the rock, gear placement, equalization, etc. and other essential anchor building practices.

Students in this class must be familiar with using belay devices with a mechanical advantage such as a Petzl GriGri and Tube devices such as the Black Diamond ATC. (Maximum of 6 participants)

Lead Climbing Class (2-days)

The Lead Climbing class teaches you how to safely climb a route from the ground up, belay systems and how to exit the route via walking / lowering off or rappelling. We also teach you rope management and “how to fall” while keeping yourself as safe as possible when coming off the rock. The class also offers rescue skills necessary to mitigate emergencies in an outdoor lead climbing adventure such as Hauling and Escaping the Belay. We also cover techniques in extending anchors and gear to ensure safety of your follower.

Students in this class must be familiar with using belay devices with a mechanical advantage such as a Petzl GriGri and Tube devices such as the Black Diamond ATC. Also, students must be familiar with using Spring Loaded Camming Devices, Passive gear, and a Cordolette for anchors. (Maximum of 6 participants)

Multi-Pitch Climbing Class (8-hours)

Now that you know how to lead climb and got some experience under your belt, you may want to try a longer climb like “Royal Arches” or “East Buttress of El Capitan” in Yosemite. Learn how to survive and be successful without getting “be-nighted”. This class will show you how to be prepared for long routes, climb efficiently as a team, have the rescue skills to get off the route, and feel confident in your decision making. Being efficient on a multi-pitch route can dictate your success or failure. Take this class and have the odds in your favor!

Students in this class must be familiar with using belay devices with a mechanical advantage such as a Petzl GriGri and Tube devices such as the Black Diamond ATC. Also, students must be familiar with using Spring Loaded Camming Devices, Passive gear, and a Cordolette for anchors. (Maximum participants – 6)

Big-Wall Climbing Class (2-days)


This 2-day course will teach you how to Aid-Climb, Ascension of fixed lines, Pendulums on lead and follow, Hauling technique, How to prep and pack your Haulbag, How and Where to set up a Portaledge, Waste Management, and Surviving your first Big-Wall route (Mitigating Pitfalls and Errors).

Students in this class must be familiar with using belay devices with a mechanical advantage such as a Petzl GriGri and Tube devices such as the Black Diamond ATC. Also, students must be familiar with using Spring Loaded Camming Devices, Passive gear, and a Cordolette for anchors. (Maximum participants – 4)

Self-Rescue Class (2-days)

Do you want to be prepared for any climbing emergency during your adventure? It doesn’t matter if it’s Top Rope or a Big Wall route, you can learn the skills to handle any situation. Take this class and learn what Guide Training and Certification Organizations use for aspirant guides. You will learn through hands-on instruction on what to do, when you and/or your partner are in trouble while climbing.

Students in this class must be familiar with using belay devices with a mechanical advantage such as a Petzl GriGri and Tube devices such as the Black Diamond ATC. Also, students must be familiar with using Spring Loaded Camming Devices, Passive gear, and a Cordolette for anchors. (Maximum participants – 4)

Professional Climbing Guides Institute – Guide Training Courses and Assessments
PCGI certifications are nationally recognized. The Professional Climbing Guides Institute (PCGI) certifications have been adopted as a requirements for commercial rock climbing guides and/or instructors working in many U.S. Department of the Interior – National Park Service areas, including but not limited to: Joshua Tree National Park, New River Gorge and Devil’s Tower National Monument.

We highly recommend the PCGI training and certification programs! Castle Rock Climbing School independently offers PCGI approved courses and assessments via our approved PCGI provider.
